Why Soffits and Fascias are Important

If you’ve ever wondered what that board tucked away from street level on your roof is called, that is called a soffit and a fascia. If you’ve ever wondered what they do, chances are you’re rather bored, so here’s a short guide to fascias and soffits in Wrexham, to help you understand. While it won’t cover everything, it will try to be as comprehensive as possible in order to get everyone up to speed.

Fascias and soffits: what do they do?

More than looking nice (which they do) fascias and soffits serve very specific purposes. Firstly, they protect your home from pests like bats, squirrels, and various insects. The added lip to your roof keeps the bats and squirrels from making it to the exterior wall, thus keeping them out of your house. They also provide extra protection for the ventilation for your attic.

If you live in a high wind climate that can cause rain to get in the eaves, the soffits keep it from getting into your home. However, this is one of the main reasons why you should always maintain your soffit. If not properly maintained, or damaged in any substantial way, water can actually build up in the soffit. If this happens long enough, it can cause major damage, so be on the lookout.

Any problems?

The most common problem, besides water build-up, are insect nests. Specifically, hornets, bees, or wasps. You should check every now and then for these, as since soffits can be very good at hiding these nests. When you do notice them, you have two options. You can either get them down yourself with a ladder or a broom. Or if the nest has grown too big, or you just don’t like heights, you can call an exterminator to come by and handle it.

The other common issue is mould and mildew. Among many other things, this is what happens when you don’t get the water out of damaged soffits. However, do not worry, it’s just as easy to get rid of mould and mildew on your soffit as it is to get rid of it anywhere. Simply scrub with a broom and a cleaning solution made with bleach and water, and the mould/mildew will disappear almost instantly.

The important thing to remember is that everything on your house has a name and a specific purpose to fulfill. Soffits and fascias are there to keep pests and strong winds from getting into your house, and to protect your attic’s ventilation. Content Morton & Jones Ltd for more details.
