Buying a Pump for an Irrigation System

by | Dec 13, 2016 | Water Pump

If you have a large garden or even a large yard, you may have or are considering getting a sprinkler system. In that way, you will no longer have to drag the hose out every time you want to water. The one thing you will find necessary for this system to work is an irrigation water pump in Dorset. The pump is what will draw water from your well, a lake, pond, river, or whatever source you are getting your water from and drawing it into your sprinkler system.

Designing Your System

Prior to purchasing your pump, you will need to design your irrigation system. To be certain that you are buying the right size pump, you need to be sure of how much land and how much water you’re going to need for that land to keep it properly irrigated. Many people buy the pump first only to find out that it doesn’t fit the system that they have constructed.

Misleading Labelling

Make sure when you go to buy your pump that you talk to a professional. Often the labels can be confusing to a layperson. When a label reads “20 GPM at 55 PSI” it is telling you that you will have water coming through at 20 gallons per minute with a pressure of 55 pounds per square inch. Be aware that a label reading “20 GPM, 55 PSI” means something entirely different from “20 GPM at 55 PSI.”

Pump Classification

Again, make sure that you talk to a professional when you go to purchase your pump. What they call irrigation pumps and high pressure pumps are two entirely different animals. The pumps that you see that are called irrigation pumps are not usable for sprinkler systems. Generally, sprinkler systems use high-pressure water pumps, whereas an irrigation pump can basically only support one sprinkler head attached to a hose.
